City of Tamarac

George Gadson's 6 ft. bronze sculpture, Egretta Thula (Snowy Egret), serves as a reminder to the importance of preserving our wildlife and natural environment. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, plums from the snowy egret were very popular, which nearly led to their extinction. Later in the 20th century, plum hunting was outlawed which allowed the bird species to recover.
This idea for the design was developed through a community participation process that solicited feedback from members of the business community, residents and children. Fabrication of the work was done through use of the lost wax process for bronze casting. Color variation in the work was achieved by applying acid to the bronze surface at varying temperature. The sculpture weighs approximately 600 lbs.
