Local Sculptor George Gadson Set to Unveil His Latest Masterpiece at Florida Memorial University
(formerly Florida Memorial College)

Fort Lauderdale, Florida (March 7, 2006) - On March 13, at 6 p.m. Florida Memorial University, located at 15800 Northwest 42nd Avenue in Miami Gardens, Florida, will unveil "Lift Ev'ry Voice" by famed sculptor, George Gadson, at their new Lou Rawls Center for the Performing Arts. The six foot bronze sculpture depicts an elegantly adorned female in an evening gown, flanked by notes to the National Negro Anthem "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing." Written by James W. Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson, the song was originally performed in 1900 by Florida Memorial's Glee Club.
"We are pleased to give the public an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the university's brand new performing arts center and its seasonal offerings and to celebrate Gadson's artistic contribution to the center", said Dr. Barbara Edwards, Florida Memorial's Vice President for Institutional Advancement.
Gadson, a self-taught artist and Duke University graduate, is a Florida native who has gained world-wide recognition for his realistic portraits and sculptures of individuals and figures that have historical significance. He has been commissioned to create works of art for many high profile events and individuals, including two limited edition commemorative sculptures - "The Kicker" and "The Quarterback" for the National Football League's (NFL) South Florida Super Bowls XXIX and XXXIII.
Gadson believes that art plays a significant role in providing a quality of life and vitality to the community he serves.
