Public Art Project Honors County’s Children and Families
by Marlene Passell
BOYNTON BEACH, FL – Broward County Artist George Gadson will be on hand December 12 at the Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County to unveil the Art in Public Places he was commissioned to create. The two 17-feet-tall bronze sculptures titled “Celebrating Children and Families” will be presented to the community during the Council’s open house on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at 2300 High Ridge Road Boynton Beach, Florida.
Gadson was selected from a national Call to Artists issued by the Council, which wanted the sculptures flanking the front of the new building to symbolize the Council’s mission and vision – recognizing our children as our future and the value of the families raising them. His work speaks to our organization’s mission of providing help and support to children and families, and integrates aesthetically with the architecture and environment of our new facility,” said Marlene Passell, spokesman for the Council. “We are pleased that the work will stand as a symbol of children and families for many years to come.”
Working in a variety of mediums, Gadson has created numerous works of art for many high profile events and individuals including two South Florida Super Bowl commemorative sculptures aptly named “The Quarterback” and “The Kicker”. He also created paintings and bronze sculptures for JM Family Enterprises, Darden Restaurants, Inc. owners of Olive Garden and Red Lobster, and the Dan Marino Foundation. Gadson was commissioned by Broward County’s Cultural Affairs Division to work on a public art project where he engaged local youth in the design and fabrication of artwork that will be incorporated into a butterfly garden.. Additionally, he created a 12 foot bronze sculpture titled “The Bridge” for the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale, a six foot bronze sculpture for a water fountain for the City of Tamarac, a seven foot sculpture for the new E. Pat Larkins Community Center for the City Pompano Beach, and a six-foot bronze sculpture for Florida Memorial University’s Lou Rawls Performing Art Center.
